ENGH 642-001: The Queer Renaissance: Queer Studies and Early Modern Texts

This course will read works by Shakespeare, Lyly, Marlowe, Donne and other early modern poets and playwrights in conversation with work in queer studies by Bersani, Butler, Dinshaw, Edelman, Freccero, Foucault, Halberstam, Halperin, Masten, Muñoz, Puar, Sanchez and Traub, among others. We shall also explore queer approaches to race, empire, religion, historiography, philology and politics, and ask how early modern literary texts both respond to and re-imagine these critical intersections.

Intensive study of a selected period, movement, or genre in British or world Anglophone literature. May be repeated within the degree for a maximum 24 credits.

Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Junior Plus, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.

Enrollment is limited to Graduate, Non-Degree or Undergraduate level students.

Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
