ENGH 722-001: Composition Programs and Pedagogies in Context
(Spring 2016)

Section Information for Spring 2016

"How do people learn (or teach others) to write" and "How do people learn (or teach others) to write in context" are questions that we don't always separate from one another, but should.  The politics and contraints of a school or workplace setting--with pressure to standardize, Taylorize, multiply, and assess writing development, and the challenges of managing scarce resources--influence the experiences of learners and the choices that writing teachers, trainers, and administrators make.  This course assumes that you are likely to be called upon to design, implement, manage, lead, and evaluate writing programs.  To help you understand and work more successfully, this course will provide an overview of scholarship on pedagogy and program administration related to the practice of instructing writers and teachers of writing in a variety of institutional settings.

For this course, writing "programs" are defined broadly, to include traditional "first-year composition" college programs, WAC/WID programs, writing centers and writing projects, K-12 curricula, and staff development programs in the workplace.  In addition to providing a review of key research in the 20th- and 21st-century writing education, the course introduces seminar participants to the scholarship regarding various elements of program administration.  Students will link theories directly to practice as they complete individual administration-analysis projects of their choice.
