Section Information for Spring 2016

From John Locke's praise of sound minds in sound bodies, to the Grimms' benevolent dwarves and ugly witches, to Hans Christian Andersen's mute and mutilated mermaid, to Frances Hodgeson to Burnett's fusion of emotional and physical recovery to Harriet McBryde Johnson's militant Accidents of Nature and John Green's best-selling A Fault in Our Stars, children's literature of obsessed with defining what is normal and what is abnormal.  This course will focus on dialogue between two relatively young and remarkably vigorous academic fields, disability studies and children's literature.  We will consider wonder, the monstrous, cruelty, pain, laughter, sentiment, and the freak as categories that these works use to frame the very different behaviors, minds, and bodies that they try to describe, and the norms that they try to create.
